Friends of Mon-Maq Dam

Friends of Mon-Maq Dam, Inc

We are an Iowa public, non-profit 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt corporation

On Novenber 16, 2017, a grassroot group of 27 volunteers joined to form a non-profit organization to preserve and protect the Monticello Maquoketa River Dam (Mon-Maq Dam) near Monticello, Iowa.  This action was taken in a continuing effort to prevent the Jones County Conservation Board (JCCB) from moving forward with their plans to destroy this dam.

We believe that the JCCB reasonings for removing the dam, and their stated project goals are flawed, and that the majority of Jones County residents much prefer to maintain the dam for its historic, educational, and recreational beauty.

Since the voice of the public was not getting through to JCCB, in spite of a survey by the Jones County Historical Preservation Commission which reported 93% of county residents supported keeping the dam, and an on-going petiton drive with over 3,500 signatures asking JCCB to Save Our Dam, it became apparent we still needed to do more

We are raising money right now to help preserve and protect the dam.  These monies will be used for publicity, education, engaging experts, and other efforts that are designed to cease the impending destruction.
